The MAZDA 5 is based
on the MAZDA 3 platform, but
its interior is expanded to regularly seat six passengers, with an
optional "6 + One" seat for a seventh rider. The additional seat can
also be converted into a centre console. The interior is arranged to
create an open space feel, so passengers can easily communicate between
seating rows. The dual sliding doors pop out only slightly, making it
easier for passengers to climb in and out in tight parking spaces. And
just like in most current minivans, a DVD entertainment system with a
seven-inch screen is available to make even long drives more enjoyable.
Inside MAZDA 5, three rows of
seating offer great flexibility, with a double-fold mechanism for
second-row seats. A flat floor design creates maximum legroom and an
easy step-through from the second row to the third. Folding all seats
down creates a virtually flat cargo floor. Clever touches include a
utility box that stows under one second-row seat, while the other is
left open for more stuff stashing. The only asterisk to the foregoing
is third-row legroom, which is extremely snug.
While the 2.3-liter, four-cylinder engine doesn?t tempt one to burn
rubber, it generates a respectable 157 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque at
3500 rpm, adequately matched to the 5?s size. The five-speed manual is
smooth-shifting with effortless clutch action, and the four-speed
automatic has a manual shift mode. The shifter is comfortably located
on a center console projecting from the lower dash, angled slightly
toward the driver.
With an overall length of 181.5 inches, a width of 69.1, and a height
of 64.2, the Mazda 5 is big enough to feel spacious yet small enough to
easily maneuver and park. Mazda designed a lightweight liftgate with a
two-step stop mechanism, allowing even small folk to operate it easily.
Sport and Touring trim packages are available with amenities such as a
premium audio system, a power sunroof, and cruise control.
Four-wheel anti-lock brakes are assisted by a system that boosts the
brake-pedal force in an emergency situation to achieve a shorter
stopping distance. Airbags are stationed front and side for driver and
passenger, and standard side-curtain airbags cover all rows of seats.
During a brief test drive we noted quiet operation, a logical control
layout, excellent driver sightlines in all directions, and easy ingress
and egress, even for the second and third rows.
Historically this type of vehicle hasn?t sold well in the U.S., but
with rising gasoline prices finally putting a burr under the SUV
saddle, the Mazda 5 may just be the ideal compromise: the little big
car.
