The
new MAZDA mx5has already broken
new ground. A chorus of accolades unprecedented in their enthusiasm
from many of the top motor journalists. The new MAZDA mx5
is in a
class of its own as it captures the true fun of a roadster.
High
levels of control and comfort
embodied with a thrilling but safe ride. The MAZDA mx5
gives you a
thrilling driving experience, but most importantly it’s FUN.
Although the new MAZDA mx5 doesnĺt share a single
part with the Miata it replaces, itĺs a worthy descendant of Mazdaĺs
landmark affordable roadster, first introduced in 1989. The 2006
MAZDA mx5 is, like its retired ancestor, a joy to drive.
Despite the fact that it is slightly larger inside and out, and has
added stiffness, itĺs only about 25 pounds heavier than the original
roadster, weighing in at about 2500 pounds. A higher beltline and
taller hood allow for a new, tilting steering column and a little more
room to play the pedals.
The convertible top is easier to operate, with a single header latch
instead of two, and can be operated without leaving the seat. We found
it relatively quiet for a convertible, even with the top down. A new
wind baffle between the headrests helps keep buffeting down.
Now to the really important stuff. The 2006 MAZDA mx5 features a 2.0 liter,
four-cylinder engine making 170 horsepower, 28 more than last yearĺs
model. Itĺs mated to one of three transmissions: a five- or six-speed
manual, or a six-speed automatic for an extra $1100. The automatic
includes paddle shifters to override the computerĺs decisions, but we
preferred the reengineered six-speed manual, with short throws and a
crisp feel. Peak torque is 140 pound-feet, 90 percent of which, MAZDA reports, is available from
2500 rpm upward.
Small fender bulges over the wheel wells make it look like the MAZDA rx8's little brother, but
otherwise the exterior retains a Miata-esque simplicity.
We think the going-away view could be enhanced by wider wheels as
opposed to the 6.5 x 16-inch or 7.0 x 17 MAZDA offerings. Run-flat tires are
available but might interfere with the MAZDA mx5 supple ride quality.
The stiffer chassis and improved suspension provide flat cornering even
at the limit, and the MAZDA mx5
front and rear anti-lock disc brakes are up to the job on even the
twistiest mountain roads.
Inside is a magnificent 2:1 ratio of cup holders to seats, and a roomy
between-seat cubby that holds anything likely to fly out when the topĺs
down.
New options include stability control, keyless ignition, a Bose stereo,
and steering-wheel radio controls. Dashboard controls are simple and
easy to use, and the instrument panel is well designed for night or day
as well as top-down glare.
With an affordable price the MAZDA mx5 is still the affordable sports car to beat.
The new MAZDA mx5 runs from
zero to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds and through the standing quarter-mile in
15.0 seconds at 91 mph. |
